"THE WANGAN CAMP SONG " BY NICK HUMPHREY

A few weeks back I shared a poem by Maine poet Holman Day,
entitled "The Wangan Camp" which was about a company store
in a lumber camp.

Well, today, I received an email from songwriter/musician Nick
Humphrey who wrote a song a few years ago based on the poem.
Here's a link to Youtube to a video of Nick performing the song.
I enjoyed it, and I think you will too!

That's terrific! Thanks for sharing the link. Sad news, today the last lumber mill in the Great North Woods of New Hampshire closed. The end of an era.

I think it was the last paper mill, Heather, but there are lumber mills still open. But I remember the smell
the mills gave off in Gorham and Berlin. I suppose it was something the locals folks were used to but for visitors from out of state, boy, was it noticeable!

We had paper mills in Jacksonville (Florida), and yes, they did smell something amazing. Very pungent, almost enough to peel the skin off the inside of your nose. One mayor referred to it as "the smell of money." When the wind was from one direction, we got the smell of the paper mill. When it was from another, we got the Maxwell House Coffee factory. Now, that one smelled good!

The paper mills are gone, but fortunately, Maxwell House is still there!

(The verification word I got today is "thyphita." which sounds like the sound made when giving someone a razzberry!)
