MY ELLINGWOOD MAYFLOWER ANCESTRY

(( I first posted articles about my Mayflower family descents back in
 November 2011 and decided to repost them every year as a Thanksgiving 
tradition.))

Back when I first started researching the family genealogy online I was
thrilled to discover we were descended from several Mayflower passengers.
At one point I even carried around a small folded up piece of paper
in my wallet with the lines of descent to show when discussing genealogy
with some customer at the bookstore. But I lost that some time ago, so I
thought I'd post them here for other family members.

52 ANCESTORS IN 52 WEEKS 2018 WEEK 24: ELEAZER ROGERS OF PLYMOUTH, MA

One again another ancestor for whom I haven't found much information online...yet. My 7x great grandfather  Eleazer Rogers seems to have been a seaman up until he suffered some serious wounds during fighting Indians  in Maine:

and Representatives in General Court Assembled, The humble petition, of Eliezer Rogers
of plymouth

Sheweth
That your Petitioner being a Soldier under the Command of Captain Thomas Dymock did
on the ninth day of September last (1697) receive Several Wounds in an Engagemt with the ffrench and Indians att Winagauts. particularly he was shott through the Thigh, and
through the right side of his head which put out his Eye, and has made him in a great
measure incapable of his Employment

Yor Petitioner therefore humbly prays that he may have his Cure perfected att the publick Charge, and may have Such further Stipend and pension as to this Honoble Court shall Seem reasonable, and yor petitioner as in duty bound shall ever pray &c

52 ANCESTORS IN 52 WEEKS 2018 WEEK 23: THOMAS ROGERS OF EASTHAM, MA'

I haven't found much so far online about 8x great grandfather Thomas Rogers so far. This, from William Hopple Edwards, is the longest summation of Thomas' life I have yet seen:

Thomas Rogers (6-22); b. May 29, 1638; d. Jun. 16, 1678;m. Dog. 13, 1965.
Thomas Rogers, son of Lt. Joseph and Hannah (----) Rogers was born in the 3rd month (old style) 29th day, lé38, and was baptized at Eastham, Mass. He married Dec. 13, 1665, Elizabeth Snow, daughter of Hon. Nicholas and Constance (Hopkins) Snow, who was born about 1610 and died Jun. 16, 1678. He died Jun. 16, l678 at Eastham.

The children of Thomas and Elizabeth (Snow) Rogers, according to Leon Clark Hills - Cape Cod Series – Vol II - 1911, born at Eastham, were:
l. Elizabeth, b. Oct. 8, 1666; m. ----- Higgins.
2. Joseph, b. Feb. 1, 1667; m. Prudence -----.

I do wonder about the death date for Thomas and his wife Elizabeth Snow (Rogers) being the same. Did they actually die on the same date, and if they did, what were the circumstances?

I am descended from their son Eleazer.

JOSEPH ROGERS JR: "'A MOST DEADLY FALL"

In the course of googling for information about my ancesto Joseph Rogers Sr., I came across several references to the death of his sone Joseph Rogers Jr/ at the hands of a man named John Hawes. I found the following account in the book Edmond Hawes of Yarmouth, Massachusetts written by James William Hawes:

In the proceedings the following entry appears: "Att this Court, John Hawes, of Yarmouth, was indited for violently and by force of armes takeing away the life of Josepth Rogers, of Eastham, by giveing him a most deadly fall, on the 25 of December, 1660, in the towne of Eastham, whereof and whereupon hee did most vehemently complaine, and about 48 houres after died. The said John Hawes did put himself upon tryall by God and the Countrey. The grand jury found the bill of inditement a true bill. The names of the petty jury, or jury of life and death, that had the tryall of this case, as followeth:
  Mr. Josias Winslow, Senir,
  Leiftenant James Torrey,
  Robert Finney,
  Cornett Robert Studson,
  Ephraim Morton,
  Samuell Hickes,
'William Paybody,
  Samuell Sturtevant,
  Ephraim Tinkham,

52 ANCESTORS IN 52 WEEKS 2018 WEEK 22:JOSEPH ROGERS OFEASTHAM, MA'

My 9x great grandfather Joseph Rogers was in his early teens when he sailed on the Mayflower with his father Thomas in 1620,and was left alone shortly afterwards. He survived and became a prominent citizen in several towns in the Plymouth Colony, as William Richard Cutter shows us:

(II) Lieutenant Joseph Rogers, son of John Rogers (1), was also a Pilgrim. He was born in England or Holland and came with his father in the "Mayflower" to Plymouth; was married and had six children in 1650. He had lands assigned to him in 1623 and was freeman in 1633. He removed to Duxbury. He was given permission by Plymouth colony to keep a ferry over Jones river near his house, March 2, 1635-36. He and his brother John had a grant of land April6. 1640. He finally removed to Eastham, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. He was appointed lieutenant of the military company at Nawsett in 1647. His will dated January 2, 1677-78, was proved March 5 of that year. He bequeathed to sons Thomas, John and James, to daughters Elizabeth Higgins and Hannah Rogers and to his wife. He gave to Beriah Higgins a, share with his children because Beriah had lived with him a great while, etc. Children: 1. Sarah, born August 6, i633. died young. 2. Joseph, July 19, 1635, died 1660. 3. Thomas, March 29, 1637. 4. Elizabeth, September 29, 1639. 5. John, April 3, 1642. 6. Mary, September 22, 1644.7. James, October 18, 1648, mentioned below.8. Hannah, August 8, 1652.

All that is known about Joseph's wife is that her first name was Hannah. I haven't as yet been able to
find a copy of his will online.

52 ANCESTORS IN 52 WEEKS 2018 WEEK 21:THOMAS ROGERS OF PLYMOUTH PLANTATION

My 10x great grandfather Thomas Rogers was a Mayflower passenger and a signer of the Mayflower Compact. Unfortunately he died not long after landing at Plymouth.

From William Richard Cutter:

Thomas Rogers, immigrant  ancestor, was one of the Pilgrim Fathers. He was born in England, went to Holland with the Pilgrims and came to New England in 1620 on the "Mayflower, "' bringing with him his son Joseph, and taking a prominent part in the colony at Plymouth. His other children came afterward. He died in the first sickness at Plymouth. Among his children were: 1. Joseph, mentioned below. 2. John, weaver and planter of Duxbury; taxed there in 1632; admitted a freeman March 1, 1641-42; town officer and commissioner of jurors; married, April 16. 1639, Ann Churchman; lived at Scituate about 1647; removed to Marshfield where he died: will dated February 1, 1660; wife Frances. 3. William. 4. Noah.pp775-776

Samuel Totman's wife was my 6x great grandmother Experience Rogers, the descendant of Mayflower passenger Thomas Rogers.

And through her mother Ruhamah Willis she is descended from Stephen Hopkins.

Experience was  also descended from several other Mayflower related families .  There will be a lot for me to blog about in these lines.

JOSEPH ROGERS: MESSING WITH MERCY TUBBS

Mayflower Joseph Rogers is my ancestor, and one of his children was
likewise named Joseph. But I don't think that they are the Joseph Rogers
who is the subject of this story. Joseph was a man in his late fifties by 1663,
and his son Joseph Jr. had died before then. Most likely this Joseph was a
nephew. However he is related to me, he was in a lot of trouble with the
authorities of Plymouth Colony, as these entries in Volume 4 of the Plymouth
Court Records shows :   

1June 1663
The Court being enformed that Josepth Rogers, of Namassakeesett, hath
frequently and from time kept companie with Mercye, the wife of William
Tubbs, in a way and after such a manor as hat giuen cause att least to suspect
that there hath bine laciuiouse actes comitted by them, the Court sees cause
and have required the said Josepth Rogers to remove his dwelling from
Namassakeesett aforesaid by the twentieth day of this instant June, and haue
alsoe delcared vnto him that if att any time hee shall bee taken att the house
of the said Tubbs, or in the companie of the said Mercye Tubbs alone in any
place, that then hee shall forth with bee taken and severly whipt ; and the
said William Tubbs was by the Court strictly charged not to tollarate him to
come to his house or where hee hath to doe att any time, as hee will answare
the same att his pill.

The aforesaid Josepth Rogers, for his contentious departing from the Court held
at Plymouth the last March without licence, being bound to appeer and attend
the said Court to answare for matter of fact, is fined fiue pounds to the collonies
vse. p42

This astonished me. There doesn't seem to be any solid evidence that Joseph and
Mercy had been misbehaving, or at least if there was, it wasn't recorded in the
Court proceedings. And yet the Court had come down hard on them. Joseph was
ordered to leave his home within twenty days, pay a fine of five pounds, and to stay
away from Mercy under pain of a severe whipping!

But the Pilgrim Fathers weren't done yet:


5October 1663
Marcye Tubbs acknowlidgeth to owe unto our sou lord the Kinge the sume of 20:00:00
William Tubbs the sume of 10:00:00
The condition, that if the said Marcye Tubbs bee of good behauior towards our sou
lord the Kinge and all his leich people, and appeer att the Court to bee holden att
Plymouth the first Tuesday in March next, and not depart the said Court without
lycence ; that then , &c.

Josepth Rogers acknowlidgeth to owe vnto our sou lord the Kinge the sume of 20:00:00
William Randall the sume of 10:00:00
The condition, that if the said Josepth Rogers bee of good behauior towards our sou
lord the Kinge, and appeer att the Court to bee holden att Plymouth the first Tuesday
in March next, and not depart the Court without lycence  ; that then, &c.

The abouesaid Marcye Tubbs and Josepth Rogers, for theire absean and lacious behauior
each with other, wenre centanced by the Court to find sureties for their good behauior
as abouseaid, and fined each fifty shillings for the vse of the collonie pp46-47   

So Joseph was fined 25 pounds 50 shillings total. He seems to have taken the hint and
stayed away from Mercy. Actually, Mercy had taken matters into her own hands. Not only
was she staying away from Joseph, she was staying clear of her husband as well.

She ran away to Rhode Island colony.

By the following spring William Tubbs had had enough and hired a  lawyer to isssue
a divorce for him. The only problem was it wasn't a legal divorce since they'd cut out
the part about appearing in a Court to have a divorce granted:

8June 1664
William Paybody, for makeing a writing  for the seperating of William Tubbs from
Marcye, his wife, in reference vnto theire marriage bond, is fined by the Court the
sume of  fiue pounds ; and Leiftenant Nash and John Sprague, for subscribing as
witnesses to the said writing, are fined each three pounds.

Att this Court a protest was openly published, att the request of William Tubbs,
against Mercye, his wife, as disowneing all debts that shee shall make vnto any
from this time forward, as not intended to pay any of them to any pson whatsoeuer.

Four years later, after Mercy Tubbs had ignored  Plymouth Colony's written requests
for her return to Plymouth, the Court granted William Tubbs his divrce.

I don't know if Joseph Rogers ever saw her again.

THE PETITION OF ELIEZER ROGERS

I'm not certain if this is my direct ancestor Eleazer Rogers with an alternate
spelling of his last name or if it's another descendant of Thomas "The Pilgrim"
Rogers who was a Mayflower passenger. Either way, he's kin. I winced the first
time I read his petition:

Eliezer Rogers' Petition 1698.

"To the Honoble" William Stoughton Esqr Lieutenant Governour and to the Council
and Representatives in General Court Assembled, The humble petition, of Eliezer Rogers
of plymouth

Sheweth
That your Petitioner being a Soldier under the Command of Captain Thomas Dymock did
on the ninth day of September last (1697) receive Several Wounds in an Engagemt with the ffrench and Indians att Winagauts. particularly he was shott through the Thigh, and
through the right side of his head which put out his Eye, and has made him in a great
measure incapable of his Employment

Yor Petitioner therefore humbly prays that he may have his Cure perfected att the publick Charge, and may have Such further Stipend and pension as to this Honoble Court shall
Seem reasonable, and yor petitioner as in duty bound shall ever pray &c

Ordered, That the petitioner shall be allowed and paid out of ye publick Treasury the Sum

It's possible it is Eleazer. I've found records of him and his wife Ruhamah Willis Rogers
selling land to two different doctors which might be to help pay for medical treatment made necessary by the wounds. But I've also seen him referred to as a seaman by trade in the
early 1700s.

What fascinates me is the fact that Eliezer or Eleazer was able to survive such a severe
wound in a time when medicine was far from the exact science it is today.

They were amazingly resilient people in those days!
