53 ANCESTORS #5:JOHN SAFFORD .OF HARVARD, MA.

John Safford of Harvard, Ma. is another ancestor who I haven't found out  mu 6March about so far. I know he was born to Thomas Safford and Eleanor (Cheney) Safford in Ipswich, Ma. on 1709. He married Martha Haskell there on 13 Sep 1735. By that time he already owned property in Harvard, Ma.

John and Martha had at least fivex children. According to what I have found, they were:
Martha,  born  2Apr 1738, in Ipswich
John,  born 17Jul 1742, in Ipswich
Ruth  born  1750, in Harvard.
Eunice,  born  12Jul 1752, in Ipswich
William, born 12Jan 1755, in Ipswich

I am descended from daughter Ruth, who married Samuel Haskell Jr of Harvard, Ma.

And that's all I know  at present about John Safford of Harvard Ma

i haven't found much online about Thomas Safford the son of John Safford. He was named after his grandfather the immigrant Thomas Safford.

Here's all that William Richard Cutter has to say about him:

Thomas, son of John Safford , was born October 16, 1672. He married (first) Elanor Shatswell or Satchwell, widow of Richard Shatswell, or Satchwell, qnd daughter of Daniel Cheney. He married (secnd) at Rowley, Massachusetts, June 29, 1725, Sarah Scott.-p1524

Thomas and Eleanor had ten children.  I am descended from their son John Safford.

John Safford is my 8x great grandfather. Here is what Ellery Bicknell Crane wrote about him.

"John Safford, son of Thomas Safford,, was born about 1633, probably in England. He settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts. He had a share of Plum Island. He gave land to his son Thomas for the maintenance of his wife  and daughter by deed dated September 5, 1698. The children of John and Sarah Safford were: John Jr., of whom later; Sarah, born July 14, 1664, died July 21, 1712; Margaret, February 26, 1665-6;  Rebecca, August, August 30, 1667; Mercy or Mary, born February 26,  1669-70; Elizabeth, February 27, 1670-1; Thomas, October  7 1672, married Eleanor Shatswell or Setchwell, widow of Richard Setchwell and daughter of Daniel Cheney; married (second) at Rowley June 29, 1725, Sara Scott"-p93

I have hia wife as Sarah Low. Their son Thomas is my 7x great grandfather.

53 ANCESTORS IN 53 WEEKS WEEK #2: THOMAS SAFFORD OF IPSWICH, MA.

My 4x great grandfather Moses Houghton married Martha Haskell. Her parents, Samuel Haskell and Ruth Safford, were Haskell 3rd cousins, and Ruth's family tree includes members of the Cheney, Bailey and Emery famiies whom I'v posted about previously.  I've also already posted about several Haskell ancestors in Samuel's side of the family.

I've also posted about Ruth's immigrant ancestor Thomas Safford, but that was five years ago, so I'll repost some of that here.

William Richard Cutter doesn't have much information on Thomas Safford:

Thomas Safford, the immigrant ancestor, was born in England and settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts, before 1641. He was on the list of proprietors of the town, April 6, 1641, and was admitted a freeman, December 19, 1648. He bought a farm at Ipswich, thirty-two acres, February 8, 1648. He was a subscriber to Denison's allowance in 1640, and had a share and a half in Plum Island. He died in February, 1666-67. His will was dated February 20, 1666-67, and approved March 26. 1667. He gave his farm to his son Joseph on condition of care of father and mother and paying certain amounts to daughters Elizabeth, Mary and Abigail. He married Elizabeth, who died March 4, 1667, at Ipswich.

Children: Joseph, born 1631-32; John, mentioned below; Elizabeth; Mary; Abigail. One daughter married Kilum.- pp1523-1524

Fellow geneablogger Amy Johnson Crow of No Story Too Small has issued the
52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks Challenge. Basically, we have to post something every
week on a different ancestor, whether a story, picture, or research problem. For
this prompt I've tried to concentrate on ancestors I haven't researched as much
as I have others in my family tree. This post my subject is my 9x great grandfather
Thomas Safford. There is a connection between him and the subject of my last
post, Thomas Low, as their children Joseph Safford and Sarah Low married each
other.

Another mystery to look into: what was Denison's allowance? Googling it only brought up
mention of it in other genealogical biographies, many of them using the same reference to
it used by Cutter in his Thomas Safford entry,

But I also found Thomas' will, which I will add to the others in my database.
